A fog of chaos has settled over the world, and amidst it lies threats to all existence itself. While many remain lost amidst petty strife, danger lurks behind the fail that separates the mundane from the mystical. Traitors of magic itself stand ready to rise, armed with horrible power that they’ll use to make themselves gods given half the chance. All the while, the fabric of this very dimension is beginning to tatter, and through the cracks seep portals to realms so horrid that they would drive any mortal to madness. Anyone with even the most basic mystic senses could tell you: the equilibrium of the world has fallen horribly out of balance. Prophets of all sorts continue to foresee ill omens on the horizon, yet there is hope. As the world becomes enshrouded in an aura of tumult, mystic forces above man have begun to take notice, and have taken action, calling upon a force long at rest.

In times of great turmoil throughout history, a mystic force of spirits known as the Arcana have guided mankind on a path of clarity amidst a cloud of disarray. Linked to the Tarot, each spirit embodies an aspect of humanity, and together make up a world of balance. Whenever this balance is threatened, these spirits are awakened by the combined power of the mystic world to restore it. Bearers of the Arcana usually are, or rather were at some time, some manner of mortal. Depending on the particular case in question, the bearer themselves may become truly ageless(such as the High Priestess). Other times, they may enter a cycle of reincarnation in which they bear the same Arcana (or just as often, another related Arcana) with every new life. Some Arcana spirits simply find a completely new bearer from age to age. Regardless of how fate chooses them, they are always united in a goal of bringing order from chaos in the bleakest of times.
